Located just a few short miles outside of downtown State College in Rothrock State Forest, the Shingletown Gap area provides unbeatable hiking opportunities with minimal travel. Offering a convenient parking lot and a ton of different trails, Shingletown Gap is a great choice whether you’re hiking or cruising on your mountain bike. A wide variety of trails and distance to cover ensures that there’s always something to explore, and with Roaring Run flowing nearby, you can always count on wonderful scenery all year long. On today’s adventure, Geoff covered just over two miles and gained a bit over 1,500 feet in elevation.

Like all outdoor activities, hiking in the winter is something that you want to be prepared to do safely and comfortably, and despite each of us having our own requirements, here are a few things that should be brought along: a map of the area a good pair of hiking socks, a water bottle, a headlamp for after dusk, trekking poles, and proper clothing for the day’s conditions.
